IELTS Writing Exam

The IELTS academic writing exam tests your ability to write clearly, organise ideas, and use academic language.

It includes two tasks: describing visual information Task 1 and writing an essay in response to a question or argument Task 2.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1

  • You’ll be asked to describe, summarise or explain visual information such as a graph, chart, table, map, or process diagram.

  • Write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.

  • Focus on key trends, comparisons, and significant data rather than every small detail.

  • Use formal, academic language – no personal opinions or informal expressions.

  • Structure your answer with a clear introduction, overview, and main body paragraphs.

  • Grammar and vocabulary variety are key to achieving a higher band score.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 2

  • You’ll write an essay responding to a question or statement on a topic.

  • Write at least 250 words in about 40 minutes.

  • You need to present a clear position, support your ideas with examples and explanations, and organise your ideas logically.

  • Common question types include opinion (agree/disagree), discussion, problem-solution, and advantage–disadvantage essays.

  • Use formal academic language and linking words to connect your ideas smoothly.

  • Marks are awarded for four areas: Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammar Range & Accuracy.
