
IELTS Writing Exam
The IELTS academic writing exam tests your ability to write clearly, organise ideas, and use academic language.
It includes two tasks: describing visual information Task 1 and writing an essay in response to a question or argument Task 2.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1

You’ll be asked to describe, summarise or explain visual information such as a graph, chart, table, map, or process diagram.

Write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.

Focus on key trends, comparisons, and significant data rather than every small detail.

Use formal, academic language – no personal opinions or informal expressions.

Structure your answer with a clear introduction, overview, and main body paragraphs.

Grammar and vocabulary variety are key to achieving a higher band score.
IELTS Academic Writing Task 2

You’ll write an essay responding to a question or statement on a topic.

Write at least 250 words in about 40 minutes.

You need to present a clear position, support your ideas with examples and explanations, and organise your ideas logically.

Common question types include opinion (agree/disagree), discussion, problem-solution, and advantage–disadvantage essays.

Use formal academic language and linking words to connect your ideas smoothly.

Marks are awarded for four areas: Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammar Range & Accuracy.
