If you are planning to take the IELTS exam in 2026, it is important to understand the different ways the test is now offered. IELTS has become more flexible in recent years, with several formats available depending on your location, purpose, and preferences.
IELTS test formats in 2026
In most countries, IELTS is available in the following formats:
Computer-delivered IELTS (taken at an official test centre)
Paper-based IELTS (availability varies by country)
IELTS Online (Academic only), taken at home
All formats assess the same skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — and use the same band score system. The difference is how and where you take the test, not how it is marked.

IELTS Online: taking the test at home
IELTS Online allows candidates to take the Academic version of the test from home or another private location with a reliable internet connection. Listening, Reading, and Writing are completed on a computer, while the Speaking test is conducted live by video call with a trained IELTS examiner.
Official information about IELTS Online can be found here.
It is important to note that IELTS Online:
Is marked to the same standard as in-centre IELTS
Uses the same band descriptors
Is not accepted by all institutions or immigration authorities
Before booking, you must check whether your university, employer, or visa authority accepts IELTS Online results.
Academic or General Training
You will also need to choose between:
IELTS Academic – for higher education and professional registration
IELTS General Training – for migration and work purposes
This decision depends on your goals, not your current English level.
Choosing the right option
Before booking your test, always:
Confirm which IELTS format is accepted by your institution or visa authority
Check availability in your country
Consider whether you feel more comfortable testing at home or at a test centre
