Understanding IELTS Speaking Part 2

The Foundations of Speaking Part 2 Format

IELTS Speaking Part 2, known as the long turn, is a section where you speak on a topic for 1–2 minutes


You get a task card with a topic and a three or more bullet points to guide your answer. You have one minute to prepare, then speak without interruption. This section tests your ability to organise ideas, speak fluently, and expand on a topic naturally.


Your cue card will looks like this:


IELTS Speaking Part 2 – Cue Card 

Describe an important item you own.

You should say:

  • what the item is

  • how you got it

  • what you use it for

  • and explain why it is important to you.

You will have to talk about this topic for 1–2 minutes.


How to Approach It

  • Take your one-minute preparation to quickly jot down ideas and examples.

  • Structure your speech simply: Introduction → Middle → End.

  • Use stories, personal experiences, or explanations to make your answer interesting.

Five Additional Example Topics for Part 2

  • Describe a memorable holiday
    Talk about where you went, who you were with, what you did, and why it was special.

  • Describe a person who influenced you
    Mention who they are, how you met them, what they taught you, and why they are important.

  • Describe a favorite book or movie
    Explain the plot or story, why you like it, and how it impacted you.

  • Describe a place you enjoy visiting
    Describe the location, what you do there, and why you like it.

  • Describe a skill or hobby you have
    Explain how you learned it, what you enjoy about it, and why it matters to you.

Part 2 is your chance to show off your speaking skills. Focus on clear structure, relevant details, and fluency, and you can confidently deliver a two-minute answer. Practicing with different topics makes this section much easier and less stressful.
